Research shows that Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) using medical nutrition therapy (MNT) is associated with improved patient outcomes in diabetes, hypertension, lipid metabolism disorders, HIV infection, pregnancy, chronic kidney disease, and unintended weight loss in older adults.(2) Additionally, RDNs have demonstrated improved outcomes related to weight management.(3-4)

When to Refer to an RDN
Consider referring to an RDN when your patient expresses distress over their nutritional status, or self-management of chronic disease such as a newly diagnosed diabetes, renal disease, or cardiovascular disease. Other nutrition related concerns include but are not limited to:
